I do practice law in Virginia. All I know is that witnesses don't have to swear on the Bible, nor do they have to say "so help me God." The judge's clerk asks "Do you swear to tell the truth and nothing but the truth," and the witness says, "I do," and if it's against their religion to swear, e.g., Jehovah's witnesses, they may affirm that their testimony is the truth, instead.
