Brian Thomas Weisel launches portfolio Investment bank bases model on 'tailwind' strategy By Deborah Adamson, CBS MarketWatch Last Update: 7:49 PM ET Oct 13, 1999 Also: NewsWatch SAN FRANCISCO (CBS.MW) -- Thomas Weisel Partners on Wednesday launched a tracking portfolio composed of 15 stocks chosen using its "tailwind" investment strategy. Today on CBS MarketWatch European shares slide in thin markets Missed profit target hurts Intel shares Time Warner reports 49% earnings hike Bank-merger talk lifts Tokyo stocks Apple tops reduced earnings targets More top stories... CBS MarketWatch Columns Updated: 10/14/99 9:01:02 AM ET The investment banker lists companies such as Amazon.com (AMZN: news, msgs), Cisco (CSCO: news, msgs) and Nokia (NOK: news, msgs) in the Thomas Weisel Partners Model Portfolio. Each of the companies must exhibit characteristics of six "tailwinds," or factors that will drive growth in the future: Internet, outsourcing, bandwidth, consolidation, demographics and education. Each also carries either a "strong buy" or "buy" rating from Thomas Weisel's analysts. Economy's power sources "We believe they are ones powering the growth economy," said Mat Johnson, growth stock strategist and co-creator of the portfolio. The portfolio will be used as a benchmark for growth stocks and also showcase the investment bank's stock-picking ability, the company said. A summary of its performance will be posted every week on the company's Web site. In picking the stocks, Johnson also looked at earnings, which, he noted, drive stock prices. He also made sure the companies aren't carrying a lot of debt and are run by good management teams. He said he isn't deterred if a stock he likes is trading at a high price-to-earnings ratio but would rather focus on the price a company can attain in the future, based on estimates by Thomas Weisel's analysts. The stocks must have a minimum market capitalization of $500 million and an average daily trading volume of at least 200,000 shares. Wind breakers A company will be de-listed if its "tailwind" effect wanes dramatically, it is downgraded to "market perform" or "underperform," or there's a material decrease in its earnings estimates. The portfolio is calculated by investing a hypothetical $1 million equally among the companies on Wednesday and then tracking its value. Other stocks joining Amazon, Cisco and Nokia in the model are Exodus Communications (EXDS: news, msgs), Infinity Broadcasting (INF: news, msgs), JDS Uniphase (JDSU: news, msgs), Jabil Circuit (JBL: news, msgs), PE Biosystems (PEB: news, msgs), PMC-Sierra (PMCS: news, msgs), Solectron (SLR: news, msgs), Teradyne (TER: news, msgs), Texas Instruments (TXN: news, msgs), Tommy Hilfiger (TOM: news, msgs), Univision Communications (UVN: news, msgs) and Verisign (VRSN: news, msgs). Thomas Weisel is a privately held investment-banking firm that serves money managers, businesses and well-heeled individuals.
