Gregory, RE: I wonder way everyone but DELL is reporting shortage and delays. Could it be that DELL has taken so much market share away that they command first rights, or, CPQ, IBM, and HWP, are so inefficient that they have to order in bulk, and the bulk is not there. I vote for both.

It could also be that negative news is treated like the plague in Austin, and thus Dell is later than its competitors in recognizing a situation.

greg -
A more likely explanation is that DELL is just the last to fess up.

edit - CPQ has larger market share than DELL and has had long term supply contracts for years. DELL is paying $200M to get into the LCD game with Samsung - CPQ has been a deep technology partner with samsung for many years and is currently a major JV partner with Samsung. CPQ still uses about 30% more parts than DELL - they are Intel's biggest customer as well as the largest customer for many other key vendors.

The idea that somehow DELL (which has squeezed vendors hard for years, pushed back carrying costs on the vendors, and refused to provide stabilizing long term delivery contracts) would somehow have more leverage than the other three, who are regarded as vendor friendly because of their "inefficient" batch productyion and long term supply contracts, is just not credible.

I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.
