Voltaire. The good thing about Intel's purchase of DSP is that the move kills vertical integration of some phone maker into ASICS thus preserving ASIC design and mfg as a separate very profitable entity from Phone making. Philips effort to vertically integrate phones and ASICS by purchasing VLSI will be resisted mightily. It is in Intel, MSFT and QCOM's interest not to have vertical integration of software, ASIC design and build, and Phone mfg. Lets face it, the wireless operators are going to try to beat the hell out of the profits of phone makers in a similar way to what's happening to PC's. Thus total profits are makimized if the three are kept separate and as little vertical integration as possible takes place.
