Kopin did some work on stereo a few years back.

They were developing an improved VR headset with Forte using SmartSlides, but it never got past the prototype stage. The video and software work was done at Kopin's Design Center in California; I believe they even hired a filmmaker to shoot some demos using a stereo camera. I heard from someone who tried it that the 3D effect was outstanding.

The SmartSlide was large enough so that no magnification was necessary. That might still be the way to go for stereo. CyberDisplays would be cheaper but would require more complicated optics. The display footprint would not be an important design consideration, as it is for cellular phones and cameras. Can power be drawn from the USB connection to drive the displays? If so, power usage would also be less important. The choice would also depend on the realism of the 3D.
