That part of the story has been discredited. As Peggy Noonan and others pointed out, Communists weren't exactly known for rejecting rising stars, especially "flakey" ones. That was their target.

Aside from the incredibility factor, the story was also discredited because it came from an old time communist and Reagan hater and had no corroboration.
