[lame patent/ cheap shot] Hi SteveG, when you get a chance (and if you're interested) would be interested in your take on the alcatel patent infringement suit against ORCT... at first glance it looks to me like a pretty lame patent and a cheap shot on alcatel's part... here is alcatel's press release: Alcatel Launches Legal Action Against Orckit Communications Ltd. biz.yahoo.com By way of context: Alcatel seems to be looking for max publicity: they issued notice of the suit from Telecom 99 in Geneva (where ORCT is presenting as well)... not much class on Alcatel's part.. also the patent was only issued on May 11 of this year so they couldn't have given ORCT much of a chance for discussion/resolution... --- ORCT's response: Orckit Communications to Vigorously Defend Against Alcatel Patent Lawsuit biz.yahoo.com --- here is the alcatel patent that alcatel is claiming orct is infringing on: "Method to Synchronize Data and a Transmitter and a Receiver Realizing Said Method," patent #5,903,612 issued May 11 1999 filed November 6, 1997 patents.ibm.com --- and here is a good analysis of the patent (thanks jcohela): messages.yahoo.com messages.yahoo.com note the discussion in the second link (second to last paragraph) about how this might boil down to not so subtle alcatel extortion on the interoperability angle... thought this particularly perceptive.. --- doesn't look to me at first glance that this patent would be particularly applicable to the full-rate splitterless announcement today.. any thoughts?.. in general, am inclined to agree with orct that ala's patent suit "is an attempt to disrupt Orckit's position in the marketplace, rather than a genuine interest in protecting their intellectual property." given the action in orct this pm, am wondering if there is more news on the way.. maybe tomorrow (?)... am having trouble reconciling yesterday's bad news with today's spike, but then again, there are probably other explanations... best wishes s
