QuesTec Offers eReplays.com as Sports TV Enhancements

QuesTec Imaging has made public their proprietary technology
called eReplays, a new video tracking system that culls data from
live sporting events. In collaboration with corporate organization
partnership, Major League Baseball/CBS Sportsline, for Web
deployment over the Baseball Live Shockwave application there and
over the last year in trial with ITV developer, ACTV, QuesTec is
currently evolving what they do to the digital set-top box platform.
Essentially, QuesTec's video tracking system works by catching
data associated to the telemetry of the ball (i.e. it's break, speed,
location) and so on. Once collected, the data is sent over the Internet
to a Silicon Graphics workstation residing at the content provider's
headend. Inside the workstation, data is instantly placed inside a
3D graphic template animation (e.g. baseball) from say the batter's
point of view and then sent back out as digital or analog video
(depending on the network partner's request). Currently, these 3D
representations appear on Fox when TV producers bring them to
view for the audience. On ACTV, viewers can call them up at will.
Eventually, the viewer may see all data associated with a particular
batter or pitcher over a set of innings when they request it. So far,
QuesTec has performed two trials with ACTV: one occurred in
September '98 in association with a Houston Astros vs. New York
Mets game. The interactive elements cold only been seen on
televisions at the All Stars Cafe in New York, however, during a
special party for VIP's there. Another trial was broadcast internally
last August to the ACTV office for a Texas Rangers vs. New York
Yankees game. QuesTec can also index interactive enhancements
so people with digital video recorders such as TiVo or Replay can
access them through an interactive menu at will. Founder, Ed
Plumacher says his company is doing good business with Europe
firms where digital recording technology has been in place a little
longer. "People have viewed this technology in the past as a niche
business, but it's becoming a dynamic environment now. It may
take the next 5-6 years for it to become big, but it's coming up
very quickly."
