AOL is also set to report first-quarter results Oct. 20. Analysts expect AOL to earn 13 cents a share vs. 5 cents a year ago and 13 cents in the sequentially previous quarter.

AOL's earnings are widely watched even outside the Internet realm. Thirty-five analysts who follow AOL have either either a "buy" or "strong buy" rating on the stock. This compares with 30 analysts following Intel (INTC: news, msgs), 22 covering IBM (IBM: news, msgs) and 27 following Microsoft (MSFT: news, msgs), according to First Call.

AOL is expected to generate sales of $1.5 billion vs. $1 billion in the same period a year ago and $1.4 billion in the previous quarter
