Some McNealy comments: ''Our success in the first quarter came at the expense of our traditional competitors,'' said Chief Executive Officer Scott McNealy. ''We gained share in many of our key markets, especially in servers for the Internet and service providers. Many are talking about 'e-everything' strategies while we are delivering real solutions for the service-driven network. Sun is powering the 'Net.' ''The public challenge to Sun by HP, IBM and others would be even more of a concern if we were fighting against new and improved strategies, but we're not. If imitation is the highest form of flattery, we are 'very' flattered.'' McNealy added. ''Our biggest challenge now is to deliver on the very same vision we pioneered in the mid 90's -- giving access to anyone, anyplace, anytime on any type of device. '' ''Our customers seem to get it. They're implementing Sun's vision of network computing throughout their infrastructure; reducing costs, streamlining processes and making the web their application platform. In just over a month, they have already downloaded nearly one million copies of our StarOffice(TM) productivity suite. The Java(TM) 2 platform is already in excess of 1.1 million downloads and the Chorus OS(TM), our embedded operating system, has shipped more than 4.5 million copies. Add the rapid adoption of Solaris(TM) throughout the Internet and enterprise and you can see that we are making a great deal of progress with our 'Portal.com,' net-based software initiative.'' McNealy concluded, ''On the management front, we are excited to have Pat Sueltz on board as the President of Sun's Software Products and Platforms division. Pat has an extensive background in general management and vast experience as an impactful 'heavy hitter' in the software industry.'' ================================================================== We are stealing market share from IBM and HWP. Sounds good to me. EKS
