I don't know anything about Mr. O'Neill's experience, but in reality many people have a lot of experience trading options before 73.

There was a very active over the counter market in options similar to the OTC stock market that existed before the creation of Nasdaq, although it was primarily the territory of professionals. Any retail action in options was not too beneficial to the customer.
