From Maurice at Telecom 99 Post 2216 on Q S&P500 thread:

<There are more cellphones per square metre here than anywhere on earth. Of course
connection is another story, though the Globalstar phones are all connecting well.
Especially the Qualcomm one which is simply superb. The others seem very bad to me -
though the Globalstar people tell me it's because maybe the satellite was crooked at the
time or that the PSTN lines were bad or something. >

Don't know if M is serious about above or just getting a little carried away with Q boosterism; I haven't seen any other complaints about the GSM phones.

RS -

I spent some time on the G* stand asking about pricing. Talked to quite senior lady.

She says -

US customer going via the satellite:-

US to US - approx $1.50 per minute

US to Germany - more than $1.50...maybe $2.00 per minute

Germany to Spain - nearer to $3.00 per minute. Better discounts may given by service providers.

European customer -

same sort of basis except that Europe is made up of a bunch of separate countries all with SP's with their own rates.

My guess is that the European customers will pay up to about 25% more than the US customer if they are lucky.

Now for the handsets themselves.

Qualcomm - Sat/CDMA

ERICY - Sat/GSM

Telital - Sat/GSM

All about the same size as the Qualcomm G* handset. Much smaller than the IRIDF handset.

BUT wait till next March ....new Sat/GSM handset from Telital. MUCH smaller. This will be the start of the new generation of small Sat phones and should see the market take off. And urge the Q to get a real small version out for next year.

Best regards,

L

PS - someone please say someting encouraging about the market.
