A coup is a seizing of power by a country's military forces. Had Washington led a group of British soldiers, it would have been a coup. As it was, there was no military insurrection, just a civilian one.

The American revolution was not technically a coup d'etat. There was no American government to seize. After expelling or imprisoning the Royal Governors, the previously existing state legislatures took over the whole government in the separate states and chose their own governors. You will note that the states claim different dates for their founding. The continuity of the states over the revolution is obvious. There was no blow at or of the state.
