Re: Is there an arguement for proprietary being able to last???

Good question. The folks over on the sandisk thread seem to think so. Sandisk is recording multiple patents, but I'm not qualified to tell how key they are. There is a value chain developing, as the compact flash is being specified for numerous products, but I'm not sure how interdependent any of those products are with others. And it is that second level of value chain that makes for a lasting gorilla market.

Flash memory solves a lot of problems. RAM is volatile, i.e., the power must be on for it to work. Magnetic media, such as hard drives, tend to be "tender" and slow. Would you say that hard drives have "lasted"? I would. The problem there is that they were commoditized because the standard isn't proprietary.

I think flash memory enables a lot of products, and I haven't seen any potential replacements.

But, I can't answer the question yet.

Best,
