Gary,

indeed wireless infrastructure is currently overwhelmingly voice. Data represents only a tiny fraction of the infrastructure. However, everybody says that within a few years most of the cellular information traffic will be data rather than voice. So the opportunity is huge. Wireless (both CDMA and non-CDMA) will convert to 3G in a few years primarily because of 3G's data capability. 3G is CDMA-based. 3Com announced a couple of days ago its plans for 3G data gateways that among other things featured easy migration of its existing CDMA data gateways to 3G. It was a clear message to CDMA cellular operators to buy 3Com's data gateways now with the assurance that they can easily upgrade to 3G later.

IMO, this announcement was even more important than the Nokia-Palm announcement. But the market ignored it -- I suppose few people understand the nuances of cellular voice/data infrastructure.

I know there are no specific mentions of the gateways but it is interesting to see that COMS isn't there. The question I have is is this because the market is so new and so small that it doesn't register yet or that CDMA hasnt' taken off yet or ...well or something else?

The value of the contracts awarded to the infrastructure vendors would include the 3Com equipment (if used) but 3Com would not be listed by name since the infrastructure vendors are reselling the 3Com equipment.

CDMA is the fastest growing wireless standard in the world and is spreading worldwide with a few notable exceptions. Maps of CDMA are available at:

cdg.org

This is a good site to learn about CDMA and to stay current with recent developments.

The recent news on GPRS (provides packet data for GSM) indicates it won't be ready for market before this time next year and edge (enhanced data for GSM) after that. The chips are literally cooking themselves with their own radiation. I'm not sure GPRS and/or EDGE will ever be widely deployed. I don't even think the GSM carriers are decided about when they will switch to CDMA as it hinges upon the ability of GPRS and EDGE to live up to their promises. I doubt either will.
