Rambus Beats Wall Street Consensus
(10/14/99, 7:53 p.m. ET)
Semiconductor Business News
With uncertainty still swirling around its Direct Rambus DRAM architecture, Rambus in Mountain View, Calif., Thursday reported higher-than-expected earnings for its fourth quarter, ended Sept. 30.

The company posted diluted earnings of $0.10 per share compared to Wall Street's consensus of $0.06 for the quarter. Rambus' net income was $2.7 million vs. $2.0 million in the quarter last year.

Rambus, which licenses its DRAM interface technology to chip makers, said revenues in the quarter were up 27 percent to $12.3 million compared to $9.7 million last year. Sequentially, the company's revenues were up 16 percent from $10.6 million in the third quarter this year. Rambus said its fourth quarter results included $3.3 million of previously deferred revenue following a change in estimates of when contract revenue would be recognized.

The company's operating income in the quarter was up 89 percent to $3.4 million compared to $1.8 million in the period last year.

Rambus' Direct Rambus format for next-generation DRAMs suffered a setback in late September when Intel disclosed a glitch in its Camino chip set for the memory interface. Since then, several DRAM makers have said they were delaying production ramps of Direct Rambus DRAMs to serve a growing demand for standard synchronous DRAM products.
