I think Hitachi in the long run as in 0.12um and below, can be the alliance for the 12" fab. Those monsters cost $3B each. I can easily see LSI and Hitachi sharing one fab. That was what a lot of DRAM companies tried to do with the 0.35/0.25um fabs before the roof caved in.

Of course LSI can also take another equity position in another 12" somewhere later too.

Much better than trying to do one of those monsters by themselves. Perhaps doing it this way, they can minimize the next round of equity/convertible bond financing that would dilute stock-holders' value.
