There were fewer social problems 100 years ago, when the Federal budget was below 10% of GDP, not over 36%......

Before taxes, the King or Priest seized money arbitrarily from people he wanted to victimize. Taxes, established by an elected majority of the voters, was a rational way to pay for necessary collective expenses (such as defense) -- the imposition of such taxes was a major advance in civilization. In a democratic government it is impossible for the state to collect more taxes than the majority will permit. Of
course, there are always whiners and freeloaders who don't want to pay their share of social expense.

Most people are stupid. They want two things - less taxes and more services. Obviously only one of these conditions can be met. Thus the problem. <g>
