August, Gottfried, Peter, Mark -- thanks for the responsesRe Crash-Guard: I tried deactivating it for a couple of hours on Friday and it began to crash more frequently -- so I went back to it. I installed only crash-guard, not the whole suite.Re winmodem: Not an issue in my caseRe moving Excel to another computer: Excel receives a feed from QCharts and so short of having yet another phone line and ISP to another computer, it would not be possible -- though this may ultimately be what is needed. Interestingly, I got a private message from someone else on SI who said that he has the same set-up as I do and he does not have any problems for the most part. The programs that crash most often are the browsers. The only thing that this person does not have is the multiple monitor set-up.Re NT Others have suggested NT as well -- though one person who sent me a pm regarding this problem that I posted advised against NT. For me the only issue with NT is the fact that it does not support multiple monitors. I understand that the new version of NT will support this -- I have also been told that WIN 2000 is more stable and will be more like an NT Lite -- my interpretation of what I have been told.make sure that you are performing a regular routine of emptying cache and temp internet files and also running defrag and scandisk to optimize your system. I have become quite diligent about emptying the caches and I end up running scan-disk at least a couple of times a day when the system freezes and I have to turn it off to re-boot it. Defrag, I have not been doing as often -- will start doing so to see if this helps.Increasing RAM I may give this a shot -- I have been thinking of doing so in any event to utilize another program that needs more memory.Taking the cover off your computer destroys the convection design of your computer case, and can increase the temperature of critical parts and burn the computer I put the cover back as soon as I read this! You use dual monitors with WinNT-2000, or alternatively with WinNT4, you can use 1) Special dual-monitor graphic card (eg Appian) 2) two identical graphic cards with NT driver support for multiple monitors (eg Matrox) I will investigate this alternative -- in any event, I am planning on a third monitor and if the dual set-up has anything to do with the problems that I am having it is probably going to get a lot worse with three monitors. I am going to have to resolve this problem one way or the other because it is impeding my ability to trade. My thanks again, to every one for taking the time to respond -- and August, I appreciate the welcome back sentiment! Oh, a final comment, I have been running this for the past 2 1/2 hours with just a single browser open--and nothing else -- and I have not had a single crash. This would be quite an achievement during the trading day. I forgot to mention that I also have AIM open for chatting with a couple of other traders during market hours.
