I know I'll be laughed at for this notion, but another interpretation of the reason for Greenspan's speech might be that his own numbers indicate that ex: oil, food, tobacco the PPI will be tame and he wants to put a damper on the rally that will happen as a result.

I happen to think that his reasons were as I stated before, he wants to give guidance to a banking community that desperately needs it.
