Anecdotal Dot-To-Dot

I have unpleasant memories of having to endure recent attempts to connect dots that don't connect. Deadend alleys, hallways that don't go anywhere, staring down stairs that end in brick walls.

But pleasant memories of connecting the dots in Highlights in the waiting room at the Doctor's office. They understood the purpose of the exercise.

How could such profound wisdom have been lost so utterly?
