Peter, I am very fast, and more prolific than most. On the quote, there is, in fact, comparatively little disagreement on ends, except for those who hold more radical visions of society. It is more a matter of means: how do we achieve a broad based prosperity; how do we address racial division; how do we lift out of poverty those mired in pauperism; how do we promote international development? The answers to these questions are what mainly distinguish liberals and conservatives at this point. That is one reason that some have been offended at George W. for the phrase "compassionate conservatism" (although I personally think it is a good idea to highlight that conservatives are trying to make society better, too). Most conservatives have "heart", but they also have "heads".....
