Diamond,

Barry, not today. Have you seen the PPI number?

Yes, but it's mostly smoke (tobacco prices). When are they going to remove things from these indices that I don't buy every week, like tobacco and airplane parts?

Tony

Jim,
I was going to answer you about the bear market that we've been in since June but I decided I'd just let you feel it for yourself. As far as the 20% off being the definition of a bear market...
Sure isn't much of a call WAITING AFTER the market is down 20% to say the bear is here, is it? <G> Besides, not all markets or indices drop 20%, some more, some less. You've had plenty of lead time.
Rates are heading up (despite what Wall Street brokerages and our own isolated, John Dowd have said) and AG is trying to talk the markets down in front of it and Y2K. You should have already raised cash
I believe Intel is about 20% off it's high right now.

Diamond Jim,

Yep - saw the ppi, after I woke up. Ho hmmm.... ppi up with tobacco increases to make up for lawsuits, energy up because the cartel raised prices (cheating now underway, as usual, I heard) and autos going for their seasonal attempt at putting a little more in their pockets (won't work - imo - too much competition) - all amount to a great big NUTTIN.

Did you notice that bond rates DID NOT go up but actually declined. 6.3% looks kinda toppy to me.

As usual, we had an overreaction to Alan's comments and to an overvalued ppi statistic. Remember what they say about statistics? There are lies, damn lies and statistics.

In my little industry which puts intermediate products into almost every manufactured product you can buy, I see no chemical prices rising. The opposite is still true. World-wide competition has moved some prices DOWN big time over the last year. Less illegal collusion from the big vitamin manufacturers like Roche, BASF and ADM also helps.

Hey, bwdik.
