Mattel seen as potential takeover target -Barron's

NEW YORK, Oct 17 (Reuters) - Toymaker Mattel Inc. (NYSE:MAT - news), the name behind Barbie dolls, could become a takeover target, now that its stock price has taken a dive after a third quarter profit warning, Barron's reported in its Oct. 18 edition.

Merrill Lynch analyst Hayley Kissel told the financial weekly that entertainment giant Walt Disney Co. (NYSE:DIS - news) and the entertainment divisions of media companies Sony Corp. and News Corp. Ltd. (Australia:NCP.AX - news) could be potential suitors.

Morgan Stanley Dean Witter analyst Leah Stambler also cited media powerhouse Time Warner Inc. (NYSE:TWX - news) and video-game maker Sega Enterprises Ltd. as potential buyers.

The paper said Mattel arch-rival Hasbro Inc. (NYSE:HAS - news) cannot be ruled out, but that it would face tough antitrust scrutiny.

''Any time you see a company that goes down this much and still has some healthy businesses'' it is a potential target, Kevin Grant, an analyst at Harris Associates LP told Barron's.

Mattel, Hasbro, Sony, Disney, Time Warner, News Corp. and Sega could not immediately be reached for comment.

But the weekly said Mattel and Disney declined comment.

Mattel on Oct. 4 said its third-quarter earnings would fall short of expectations because of large losses at its recently-acquired software unit Learning Co.

The stock closed down 7/16 at 12-1/2 Friday, off its year high of 40-1/2.
