Yes, but that was the whole idea.
Word of mouth, or email to friends, has been proven to be powerful in the past to spread the word. I wonder how many clicks MiningCo, er about.com, got per dollar of radio advertising?

What about $ spent for a valid member (i.e. their email address works)? For suite101.com, lets say they ONLY get 100 new members a day, then the cost is $6 per member. My guess is they are doing much better than that. Netzero gives away free ISP every month! about.com has to pay for advertising and guides.... It seems like a very cheap method to get members.
