Even without understanding the structure of proteins - medicinal chemistry started in the 1880s and, like the automobile, didn't get firmly established 'til the Teens. Medicinal chemists were turning out wonderful things like diamorphine and phenobarbital and speeeeed before protein structure was anything more than a list of amino acids and their proportion. Sequence didn't get attacked til the Thirties. We came far fast. Will the next century be the DNA century, just as this one belonged to plastics?
