Hi Colin,

I have a friend who will have her FRTE stock converted into SUNW stock this coming WEDNESDAY due to a take-over.

Question: If she were to sell SUNW short on MONDAY (to lock in the current value of her FRTE holdings) would she be able to AVOID A TAXABLE EVENT until she decides to use the proceeds of the stock conversion to cover her short position some time in the (very distant) future?

Thanks in advance to all respondents! John.

(Also, thanks Richard for pointing me to this very fine thread!)
