China: A Set-Top Hotbed

Philips and MyWeb Inc launched a new device that melds a TV set-top box capabilities with Internet access for the Chinese market, which currently has about 4 million Internet users, a number that is expected to grow to 27 million by 2003, the companies said.

The reason for the combo: only 10% of China?s population intend to buy a PCs within the next 2 years.

Nokia, meanwhile, inked a $29 million joint venture with China-based firms Zhongzin Technology and Beijing Broadcasting and Television to make TV set-tops with Internet capabilities, the Securities Times reported. Microsoft has completed deals with at least 30 Chinese companies for a similar set-top box project
