The digital headend

The digital headend system collects and processes all available services (video, audio and interactive applications) and transforms them into reliable and stable, DVB-compliant MPEG-II signals.

When the signals meet the high standards of Mediakabel, they are combined in an number of transport streams and broadcast to the individual Cable TV Networks. During the processing of all incoming services, the signals are scrambled according to the DVB common conditional acces algorithms. The scrambling system is the well known "Viaccess", developed by France T‚l‚com.

Mediakabel has commissioned Tandberg Television AS (from Norway) to build the very heart of the digital headend. The order consists of 4 Divicom multiplexers, equipped with multiple output modules, several ASI matrixes from Sandar and the "Tandberg System Manager" software application. This application will cover the configuration, automatic control and automatic redundant switching of the complete digital headend.

The total system is designed in such a way that, despite the complexity of the matter, configurations can easily be changed on-line. The extension of the number of services, as well as the creation of local bouguets and the possibility of local advertising inserts, are features which are fairly easy to implement.

The complete system configuration can be changed driven by a playlist, which is fed by an external scheduling tool, e.g. a Content Management System.

Mediakabel, a Netherlands-based cable consortium that will reach 3 million subs by this fall, has selected Lysis' iDTV software platform to manage the core of its new digital cable platform, offering pay-per-view, video games, music channels and interactive services.

The fully DVB-C compliant digital platform will be used by cable companies ENECO, Gelrevision, Palet Kabelcom, ZekaTel, De Alkmaarse Kabel, Nutsbedrijf Heerlen, Kabeltex and Nutsbedrijven Maastricht.

"The launch of the Mediakabel platform is a significant event in Dutch broadcasting, given the extremely high penetration of cable in the Netherlands," explained Lysis CEO Alexandre Tzonis. "Not only will this platform serve a vast number of consumers, but also it will provide many different types of services these consumers have never seen before."
