Berezovsky Stole 600 Million Dollars

LAUSANNE, Switzerland, Oct 17, 1999 -- (Agence France Presse) Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky allegedly embezzled up to 600 million dollars from Russian airline Aeroflot, Switzerland's Federal Court said Saturday, quoting Russian investigators.

Switzerland's highest court quoted the figure -- three times higher than previous estimates -- in documents on a series of judgements made at the end of September as part of the joint Swiss-Russian investigation into the affair.

The Swiss court said Russian reports alleged that Berezovsky, a close associate of Russian President Boris Yeltsin, stole the money with the help of two senior executives at Aeroflot.

According to the court, Russian investigators think the money went through the Lausanne-based businesses Andava SA and Forus SA.

The Swiss authorities have frozen accounts in four banks: UBS, Credit Suisse, and the Geneva branches of the French banks Credit Lyonnais and Credit Agricole Indosuez.

The court has rejected several attempts by Andava and Forus to get the accounts unfrozen. Both companies deny involvement in the scandal. ((c) 1999 Agence France Presse)
