I too agree that sharing the profits with those who's efforts and creativity contributed to the success of the company. Where I tend to disagree with across-the-board option grants is when those people who could never be considered to have made unique contributions become multi-millionaires at shareholder expense. For example, at Oracle a long-term secretary retires with thirty million in stock! I know secretaries work hard, but I can't swallow the idea that their contribution is worth millions. Non-key people should be paid a fair living, and if they choose to invest some of their income in the shares of their employer, they can prosper along with the other shareholders who purchased shares with their own money.

In short, if janitors gets rich from working at Microsoft, management has not been good stewards of the shareholder's investment.
