Mike,

Here's a story from a few years back when I went to the track every Saturday, Sunday and holiday.

I used to hang out with a couple of pros (betting was their living) and a handful of wannabes on a regular basis. We'd share insights, information, argue, teach each other etc...

I was there one day and one of the regulars hit the pick 6 for $300,000+ (I can't remember the exact figure).

I think playing horses takes you on a greater emotional roller coaster ride than investing does, even though the amounts of money are much smaller.

If you are a serious player, it puts your ego and intellect on the line on a regular basis.

On the plus side there are brief moments of pure joy when you are right and cash a ticket. For an instant during the stretch run your brain is emptied of everything that is bothering you or wrong. That makes the empty days worth it.
