I do understand about sentiment, what I never understood was (and this may be patently obvious but...)

puts could be buying puts (bearish) or selling puts (bullish)
calls could be buying calls (very bullish) or selling calls (sort of sideways, neither bullish nor bearish)

Volume doesn't tell you who did what, does it?
