Charles, One problem IBM does have is the baggage of the old guard who supplied the dealer network. All those cronies are used to being well fed and will lobby internally to cripple the direct mode so their dealer network(the meal ticket) continues. This has been the problem of many Dell wannabees, and their downfall. IBM needs to throw out the old model and pension them off, even all the unix boxes etc will have to be sold direct and the clients can buy IBM or ???support. IBM has enormous internal costs structures for their support staff and it could easily be done privately as long as IBM makes data available. If IBM guards the data, then linux and othernix systyems will do better as thet can be third party supported more cheaply.
