Thank you for your thoughtful response. I will attempt a re-read of Ulysses, this time armed with the Stuart Gilbert commentary. I read a few pages yesterday and was surprised with the ease of reading. That is baffling, as I recall getting very distracted when I first read it some years ago. I'm presently reading Ancestral Voices by Conor Cruise O'Brien, which deals with religion and nationalism in Ireland, so the timing may be perfect to plunge into Ulysses.

As for Finnegan's Wake, half my books are in storage and Finnegans did not make the cut, but when we finally assemble our belongings I'll try sipping at it here and there as you suggest. Meanwhile, I have Gravity's Rainbow in my "waiting to be read" pile. That should toughen me up for Finnegan's!
