Ron,

I disagree with your thinking. You said that the U.S. is not an export economy! ---We have been exporting the Dollar at an unbelievable rate, whereas every dollar ever printed still exists. Unlike gold, these dollars are not consumed and have no attritional loss.
....An interesting comparison would be the total volume of Dollars over world population vs. gold over population, in a chronological chart.
....If the dollar were to no longer exist, there would many forms of substitution including gold. What would we do without gold?
