You always need DRAM. Even so-called dumb terminals will need memory local to the terminal to hold some sort of operating system, not to mention a local copy of the application it's running, the data the application needs to manipulate, etc. Moving everything onto the server is an idea that was already a hot topic years ago, but died because of its shortcomings and because the price of PCs dropped to the point where dumb terminals no longer made any sense cost-wise.
