Chipmaking Gear Sales Surge 42% In Aug

Monday, October 18, 1999

TOKYO (Nikkei)--Domestic and overseas sales of semiconductor-manufacturing equipment by Japanese makers reached 78.96 billion yen in August, up 42.5% from the same month a year ago, according to the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan.

Orders received by members that month soared 138.9%, the trade group said.

The trade group attributed the strength to accelerating capital spending by chipmakers against the backdrop of rising prices.

Sales of wafer-processing equipment, the largest segment at 48.75 billion yen, were up 45.7% on the year, a sharp rise from July's 13% gain.

Orders for chip-making equipment, including imports, jumped 83% to 35.33 billion dollars, while sales of Japanese and foreign equipment recorded a 46.7% increase to 42.79 billion yen.
