OEX options can be called early (American). Most other index options can only be exercised at expiration (European).

You are right about definition of American vs European style options. American can be exercised on any trading day before expiration.

I know it's confusing (since equity options are American), but the OEX is the only index option (or one of few... I won't claim to know them all) that is American.
