Market

Business Editors/High-Tech Writers

MUNICH, Germany--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 18, 1999--

FAST Multimedia Uses C-Cube Silicon to Offer up to 30 hours video
storage, TV Timeshifting and Ability to Record Two Shows at One Time

C-Cube Microsystems (Nasdaq: CUBE), today announced that
Germany's first Digital Video Recorder (DVR) uses its DVxplore(TM)
silicon. TV-Server(TM), a product of FAST TV SERVER AG, was announced
and demonstrated today at a press conference held at the ICM Congress
Center in Munich, Germany.
Along with TV-Server, FAST is offering an internet service that
allows consumers to select shows that they would like to view at a
later time. The shows are broadcast directly to the consumer's
TV-Server DVR and can then be viewed on-demand on the consumer's
television. Using C-Cube's DVxplore MPEG-2 CODEC with advanced MPEG-2
compression algorithms, TV-Server can to store up to 30 hours of video
in MPEG-2.
TV-Server also incorporates a number of advanced features that
are based on the unique capabilities of C-Cube's DVxplore. C-Cube's
encode/decode capability allows FAST users to perform TV timeshifting
(pause, fast-forward, rewind and instant replay of live or recorded
broadcasts). FAST has also incorporated two DVxplore chips into
TV-Server, allowing users to record two shows at one time. As a
planned option for TV-Server, C-Cube's realtime DV to MPEG transcoding
capability will allow FAST users to connect their DV camcorders to the
TV-Server and store their footage in MPEG-2.
"The German home entertainment market is primed for a high-end
home video server solution that can simplify the TV viewing experience
while delivering a compelling service," said Matthias Zahn, founder
and CEO of FAST Multimedia AG and FAST TV SERVER AG. "Our work with
C-Cube has resulted in an innovative product that we believe will
break open Germany's market for consumer digital video recording
devices."
"FAST has developed a digital video recording device that is
well-matched to the needs of Germany's home entertainment market,"
said Fermi Wang, vice president and general manager for C-Cube's
PC/CODEC division. "TV-Server takes full advantage of our MPEG-2
consumer CODEC, offering the industry's highest image quality and
novel features."

Well you didn't get the boost you were looking for, but it will come if you are patient. November is the best month of the year pricewise for Cube on a historical basis. Keep that in mind.
