You're right. I don't work for a start-up. When I started my business I expected to pay a reasonable price for all expenses, including hired help. I wasn't looking for partners and I didn't ask these people to share the risks involved, and they didn't expect to share the rewards.

About engineers' compensation: Brains are a scarce commodity and should be priced as such. I agree that that the contribution made by technical people is often seriously undervalued by management. However, moving from a technical position to running the show, I've developed an appreciation for the difficulties facing the boss. Much of the boss' duties involve allocating scarce resources, and human nature dictates that a large chunk of those resources are allocated to herself. I'm not trying to justify CEO compensation levels, but only explain them.

As for everyone from janitor to CEO pitching in, if the janitor covers for the CEO, your company has either exceptional janitors or your CEO gives the place an awfully expensive sweep-up. Pay your janitors millions of you wish, but don't expect me to view the it as sound business.
