Finnish pigs to keep their tails

OCT 18, 1999, M2 Communications - The Finnish pigs should be allowed
to keep their tails, according to Animalia, the Finnish animal rights
organisation. The Finnish ministry of forestry and agriculture has
reportedly planned to change animal rights regulations to allow pig
farmers to cut off the tails of pigs to avoid tail biting. According to
Animalia, tail biting is a symptom of other problems and not a problem
in itself. Economic reasons should not be allowed to regulate if the
tails are cut off, although it is cheaper to buy the instrument to cut
the tails off instead of consulting experts to examine the possible
causes or to improve the pigs' environment. Animalia also fears that by
allowing the tails to be cut off, the procedure may become routine, the
Finnish newspaper Hufvudstadsbladet reported. This would not be in
agreement with the Finnish image as an animal protection country
according to Animalia.
