In the latter part of the 15th Century, the Venitians had the richest economy in the world because they exercised a monopoly in Europe's trade with the Orient. They were the gatekeeper.

Then, in or around 1500, the Portugese explorer Vasco da Gama found a direct route around Africa to India (and soon thereafter to China and Japan), which spelled the end of the Venitian monopoly. In fact the Venitian's couldn't even compete. The Venitian economy went into a steep decline from which it never recovered.


Exactly what I've been trying to tell those NITE investors!
