I've been watching this thread for awhile and think SNDK will be on its way back soon to new highs. Thought you might like to see this news UMC Foundry CEO on Raising Wafer Prices, ADR Sale: Comment Taipei, Oct. 18 (Bloomberg) -- The following is a comment from Peter Chang, chief executive in foundry operations at United Microelectronics Group (UMC Group), the world's No. 2 custom-designed chipmaker: ``Brisk demand is prompting us to raise prices of 8-inch equivalent wafers by 5 percent to 25 percent. On top of that, we plan to increase the prices for some long-term customers from January. ``The biggest problem we're facing is the shortage of capacity. Even though we're lifting our capacity to 2.2 million wafers next year, excluding those from Nippon Foundry Inc., it's still not enough.' Last year, UMC's capacity was 1.83 million wafers, some analysts said. ``We think it's doable that our net profit margin may rise to 30 percent next year. According to our clients' forecast, our production lines have been fully booked through the first half of next year.' Chang said no comparison figure was immediately available. ``The dateline we set for ourselves to finish absorbing four units remains at Jan. 1. After that, our earnings per shares next year will be higher than the NT$2 we estimated in June.' UMC has said it expected to earn about NT$1 a share in 1999. On its plan to issue American depositary receipts in June, 2000: ``We want to raise our exposure on the world stage. The sale should help achieve that. ``The initial plan is to let our U.S. joint-venture partners sell some of their shares,' bringing in one-time gains. The partners include Nasdaq-traded S3 Inc., SanDisk Corp. and Xilinx Inc., all of which are among UMC's top 10 clients, analysts said.
