Tolling for the Bells

For years the regional Bell operating companies (RBOCs) have been promising to deploy high-speed Internet access through digital subscriber lines (DSL). In recent weeks, with major announcements followed by massive ad campaigns, they appear to be following through with their promises.

The most recent such announcement was on Oct. 18 when SBC Communications (nyse: SBC) pledged to spend $6 billion to roll out DSL in its West and Southwest markets. Several weeks earlier, Bell Atlantic (nyse: BEL) made a similar announcement and fellow Baby Bell US West (nyse: USW) has been offering DSL connections since May.
