The economic "hardship" a military engagement would cause the US would be nothing compared to the economic devastation we would wreak upon China if we froze their assets in the US and cut off all trade. The only thing keeping their economy and efforts at revitalization afloat is the huge trade surplus they have with the US. They would get a very quick refresher course in what the phrase "third-world country" really means.
