No, they are not our allies in peace. They are a country that is highly unstable, with no democratic traditions, and a traditional enmity for the West. I think you need to read or re-read Sun Tzu's The Art of War. Now is the time to take efforts to contain Russia; if they are never hostile again then our cautious moves did us no harm; should they regress (and history is full of this), it will be too late to act later.

No, our security demands we must gain as much ground as possible now. This is not a sporting game--it is a high stakes game of life and death where the Marquis of Queensberry rules do not apply. Sorry if this is un-P.C., but that's the harsh reality. Apeasement never works--it just breeds resentment and hostility toward the weakling "benefactor."

(By the way, it would be different if we could just go in and effectively disarm them, as we did in post-War Japan).
