Earnings hurt by earthquake- dailynews.yahoo.com
Dell, the leading direct distributor of personal computers, seeks to use tight, "just-in-time" component procurement in order to wring efficiencies out of its supply chain and pass along what are typically falling electronic component costs in the form of lower PC prices to its customers.
However, in this instance, the strategy appeared to have exposed the company to a sudden spike upward in memory prices.

Funny thing about this just in time system, the only part that's just in time is what Dell needs. Their suppliers have waiting in warehouses along with allocated production for all that Dell requires . Could it be that Dell knows costs are increasing for existing contracts going to the forth quarter and decided to offset some of those costs by charging replacement cost of menory into this quarter ?

In and out of this one, looking to get back in, could pose a compelling opportunity.
