Canadian Pacific Railway Selects Newbridge Broadband
Multiservice Solution for its National Signals and
Communications Network

KANATA, ONTARIO--Network Supports Mission Critical Voice and Data
Traffic to Manage and Control CPR's Daily Operations

Newbridge Networks (NYSE: NN; TSE: NNC) today announced that
Calgary, Alberta-based Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), one of
Canada's largest employers, has selected the Newbridge(r)
broadband multiservice platform for its national signals and
communications network. CPR's transportation network spans 24,000
kilometers (15,000 miles). It connects North America's Atlantic
and Pacific coasts and links Canada's principal cities, as well as
16 states throughout the United States.

CPR is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Limited,
which also owns Canadian Pacific Hotels, CP Ships, Pan Canadian
Petroleum and Fording Coal.

CPR's network, one of the world's largest asynchronous transfer
mode (ATM)-based broadband multiservice networks for integrated
voice and data services, will help the company achieve its goal of
becoming the preferred business partner in rail-based
transportation services.

The network manages and controls the railway's entire networking
infrastructure, including its daily rail operations and safety
equipment. Mission critical communications signals are transported
along the company's rail lines to its network management center in
Calgary. These signals enable voice communications between
conductors and other railway personnel, establish and monitor the
location and movement of freight, passenger and commuter trains
throughout North America, and control railway safety equipment,
such as signal lights and crossing gates.

CPR required a comprehensive, fully managed multiservice solution
to meet its stringent requirements for managing and controlling
its railway operations across Canada and the Northeast and Midwest
United States. Equally important was its need to integrate the
platform into its existing fiber optic infrastructure simply and
cost effectively.

"Newbridge spent considerable time getting to know our business,
working with us to develop a cost-effective networking solution
that is tailored to the unique environment in which we operate,"
said Bob Nash, general manager, signals and communication,
Canadian Pacific Railway. "Only Newbridge was able to deliver a
turnkey solution that includes a comprehensive family of
networking products, installation, network commissioning,
training, ongoing support services, and end-to-end network and
service management."

The Newbridge solution comprises the industry leading
MainStreetXpress(tm) 36170 Multiservices Switch - the industry's
largest selling ATM switch - the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network
Manager, the 3600MainStreet(r) Bandwidth Manager and CrossKeys
Resolve(r) Ni software.

Installed in the networks of more than 350 service providers
worldwide, the MainStreetXpress 36170 Multiservices Switch
provides a broad range of interfaces and service offerings. These
include high speed Internet services, Internet protocol (IP)-based
virtual private network (IP-VPN) services, local area network
(LAN) interconnection, native cell relay, circuit emulation for
advanced private line services, voice over frame relay and voice
over ATM, digital subscriber line (xDSL), and broadband wireless
services.

End-to-end network and service management capabilities are
provided through the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager. A key
benefit of the MainStreetXpress 46020 Network Manager is that it
can be easily and quickly integrated with service providers'
operational support systems. Its capability to provide network and
service management across multiple technologies and services,
including IP, ATM, frame relay and time division multiplexing
(TDM), enables service providers to quickly add new offerings,
while substantially reducing their operations, administration and
maintenance (OAM) costs. It can manage up to 5,000 nodes and paths
on a single platform. It also enables up to 255 simultaneous
operator sessions and more than 1,000 network partitions.

"We are delighted to provide CPR with a cost-effective networking
solution that addresses the company's unique, mission critical
communications requirements," said Brian Jervis, executive vice
president, Switching Products Group, Newbridge Networks.
"Integrating our solution into CPR's existing network
infrastructure will result in significant cost savings for the
company. It also provides CPR with the flexibility to seamlessly
add new voice and data services when required."

CPR's future plans include enhancements to its communications
network that will allow the company to continue to meet ongoing
demand for value-added services. CPR also plans to connect
Canadian Pacific's other subsidiaries' voice and data traffic into
its network. This will provide the subsidiaries, such as CP
Hotels, with greater bandwidth, enabling them to cost-effectively
deliver next-generation voice and data services to their
customers.

CPR, a subsidiary of Canadian Pacific Limited, operates about
24,000 kilometers (15,000 miles) of track in Canada and the United
States, has approximately 19,000 employees and annual revenues of
$3.4 billion. The railway serves ports on both coasts of Canada
and all regions in between, as well as the Midwestern U.S. into
the Chicago heartland and the most industrialized and populous
sectors of the U.S. Northeast. News and information are available
