(BSNS WIRE) MRV Communications Announces the OptiSwitch Family -- a New Generation of Switching Technology From NBase-Xyplex

Business & Technology Editors

YOKNEAM, Israel--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 19, 1999--NBase-Xyplex, a
division of MRV Communications, Inc. (Nasdaq:MRVC), today announced a
new product line of next generation ethernet switching technology: the
OptiSwitch(TM) family.
The OptiSwitch(TM) family covers the range from workgroup
switches up to a mid-size enterprise Gigabit Ethernet core switch. The
product line is designed to provide solutions for Fiber-to-The-Desk
and Fiber-to-The-Curb (FTTC) applications. The family features a
variety of modules supporting Ethernet, Fast Ethernet and Gigabit
Ethernet and is characterized by its high density fiber optic ports:
up to 64 Fast Ethernet fiber optic ports on the NH2064 and up to 192
ports on the NH3024.
The NH3024 provides the enterprise switching platform in the
family; it has hardware-based Layer 3 routing capabilities and a
switching fabric which supports 24 Gigabits per second. It can
accommodate 24 OptiSwitch(TM) plug-in modules.
Eyal Nouri, product manager for the OptiSwitch(TM) family
commented: "In view of the emerging new standard for small size fiber
optic connectors, such as MT-RJ, 3M's Volition and LC, we decided to
provide support for all three.
"Our challenge was to enhance today's network technology and
provide a flexible solution that will meet the most up-to-date
requirements. The OptiSwitch(TM) family is ready for tomorrow's
networks, with an integrated solution that combines Voice, Video and
Data, using advanced features such as IGMP snooping, GMRP, Mac Based
Security and others."
The OptiSwitch(TM) family supports all the latest high-end
industry standards such as IEEE 802.1q VLAN Tagging, IEEE 802.1p
Priority Queuing, and IEEE 802.3x Flow Control, with cutting-edge
hardware architecture that provides non-blocking performance per
module using a crossbar-switching matrix.
All models in the OptiSwitch(TM) family, NH2025-10, NH3004,
NH2064, NH2064F and NH3024, are chassis-based with a highly flexible
switching platform, and all support the same high-speed modules. The
OptiSwitch(TM) modules are named EM2003.
The OptiSwitch(TM) family is supported by extensive management
capabilities including RMON support (statistics, history, alarms and
events) and Telnet. In-Band management can be provided using
NBase-Xyplex's comprehensive MegaVision NMS.
Of the OptiSwitch(TM) family, currently the NH2025, NH2064,
NH2064F are available. The NH3004 and the NH3024 will be available by
the end of the quarter.

Re: MRVC's Positioning in the Access/MAN Market

"I was looking again at the section of the Van Kasper report on Optical access. This part bears repeating right now:"

Sector,
I fully agree with the significance of what you posted. Up to cut&paste of the Van Kasper report(which I just read for the first time), I was purely speculating as to MRVC's positioning plans. The report makes it much clearer as to where MRVC is heading. And IMVHO, I agree with it.

I was under the impression that MRVC did not have access products that fit between the telco's CO(Central Office) and the customer's premises. I thought they only had products for solving bandwidth problems in the CO-CO / metro market. But apparently I was mistaken.

Not being that well versed in the details of MRVC's product line, can you save me some time and explain where in the network, their access products fit? Or point me to the proper urls.
______________

One other thing. Do you happen to have some links to the details of the BLS deployments. I just did a double take on the figures and am quite surprised at them. I would like to read some more details about this aspect. Especially MRVC's relationship to them.

Thanks for saving me some time! During earnings season, it gets pretty hetic for me.
Thanks,
MikeM(From Florida)
